WordPress gets a facelift

I’m relatively new to the blogging thing (I still hate that word) but I’m not a goon that is unfamiliar with computers and WordPress. It would seem that WordPress v.2.5 got a facelift.

The interface is moderately changed and the look is updated.

Why do I bring this up? Well it ties nicely into the subject I wanted to discuss which is the odd need for updating. Why the societal obsession with updated look?

I understand functional needs for updating. A great example being the Windows operating system. When bugs and flaws are discovered the developers need to update the system to keep it safe for users. We maintain (update?) our automobiles and lawnmowers. These are trivial cases because they are motivated by functional requirements.

I’m talking about the aesthetic aspects of updating. Image make-overs are a common thing and companies seem to feel the need to undertake them. Naturally that need is driven by the consumer, but why does the consumer want it? Why do we feel better when we buy/use something with a “new” looking package and logo. Even my university upgraded it’s own coat of arms this year…. why?

It’s probably something psychological that I’m missing. I seem to be the odd man out when it comes to marketing. Not many of the common marketing techniques appeal to me. Newer looking cars, logos, packages, and products are less important than functionality.

Interestingly, it seems we also hearken back to the past for some appeal. “Old” looking stuff also seems to sell. Classic designs, ancient symbols, and the “worn in” are all valid on the market today. I think I’m more likely to fall for this tactic than the “new” one. (Don’t forget I’m a history lover).

Is today so bad that it cannot be appreciated for it’s own merits? We look to the future and the past but what about the now?

(In this post I refer to market and selling not as strictly monetary terms but more broad concepts.)
