Take responsibility

I don’t know about you but I get rather upset when people don’t take responsibility for their actions. However, while in deep thought during the drive to the supermarket today I asked myself why?

Why do I get upset when people don’t take responsibility? I know it has something to do with some elusive notion of justice. If someone does something bad we seek to make them… what? Pay? Learn better?

This ties in completely with theories on crime and punishment. Are prisons made to rehabilitate, punish, or simply keep the offenders away from the rest of us?

It just came to me while driving.

In regards to prison, I’d say they’re largely for keeping “them” away from “us”, as well as a form of punishment. If they’re for rehabilitation, they are, by and large, failing. If they were rehabilitating people, why do people end up in prison repeatedly, often for repeating the same crimes again and again?
