Character building

I was thinking this evening to myself, as I often do. I thought about something I came across here via NDNL. It’s about testing one’s character. Then I thought to myself, doesn’t everything test your character? Does not every single event build one’s character?

I enjoy puzzling over little things like this, commonly held beliefs I suppose they’re called. After all everyone likes to think that big events in life are character building, the clarification that needs to be made is that they perhaps build the most, but every event builds. Everything you take in helps form your personality.

They say failure teaches us more than success, I think it’s more about people’s perceptiveness when they’ve failed. Successes can teach us just as much as failures it’s just that we don’t perceive as readily because we’re riding the high of… success.

I’d like to argue that it requires a change in outlook to learn from all situations and conditions. Do I do this? Of course not, when I ace a paper the last thing I think about is what got me the grade or how I could improve it or what other routes I could have taken along the way.

Nonetheless I think it’s a worthwhile endevour to continually question and evaluate your environment and situations; there are lessons everywhere.
