Freedom of information
Just pretend that someone has asked you for a tool that would help them succeed at something. Imagine that they need this tool because they decided that the tool they made was not sufficient for the job. But you know that in giving them the tool you will be put in direct competition with them. After all you made the tool for your own use, to give it away to someone seems almost unfair doesn’t it?
Well what if that tool is information? If for instance it was a gun it would be difficult to justify giving someone else a rifle because then they could take your food supplies, they could threaten your family or friends. But how does it work with information? If my success depends on my use of the information I have accumulate, how does that compare with someone who was unable to, or too lazy to, accumulate their own information? Am I obligated to help them? Should I help them?
