Independence

What is it about this thing called independence. I refer to the individual type, not the state and nation type. Though even on the international/national level this plays out.

Why do persons wish to be independent? The lessons of all of human history teach that we achieve so much more when in groups or together. That’s the great irony isn’t it, we’re better together but no one seems to genuinely want that. I suppose the distinction needs be made between subjected and forced into a group and voluntarily choosing to assist others.

How odd that so much can ride on such a fine point of difference.

Anyway my original question is why do people not like being forced into things but will do them of their own accord given the choice?  Why is that notion of freedom of choice and appearance of independence so important?

I have a feeling many people will say something about it being the essence of our identity, what we choose to do and how we choose to act is distinctly us.  The question remains though: why do we need to assert that to the rest of the world?  Can a person not complete a task forced or otherwise and just be content with their identity being known only to themselves?
