Showing appreciation

Is it possible to show appreciation to another human being without them (or someone else) suspecting that the action has an ulterior motive?

I’ve recently been made aware (again) that some persons seem to think that a thanks is an attempt to indebt the person being thanked. Has society moved so far away from proper (normal?) interpersonal relations that everything now has connotations including a thank-you? Are people so weary and frightened of direct speech and conversation that they feel they need these insinuations and connotations? Or has society always had these connotations and I am just suffering through a rude awakening?

Crappy.
