Advanced culture… what does it mean to you?

So what do you think the definition for an advanced culture should be?

I’ve come up with a definition that works for me, I’d like to hear yours. I’m inclined to say an advanced culture is one that can do things better than any other.

Many persons claim advancement implies technology only. I don’t believe that covers all of the bases. For instance imagine two men who go out into the woods with identical axes and identical clothing. If one brings back more wood using a better, easier to carry method, I would say he’s more advanced.

I suppose its possible to entail thought into technology. As it seems Oxford has done in its definition:

“A discourse or treatise on an art or arts; the scientific study of the practical or industrial arts.”

Though… it could still be debated methinks.

So then, is north America advanced? Or just lucky that it has material and labour to spare, enough so that it gets by well and seems advanced?

What do you think?
