The Problem With Capitalism
Philosophically speaking capitalism seems very appealing at first pass, but it has an issue that I cannot find an answer to. Capitalism does not seem to- to my knowledge and I am no philosopher- answer the question of communal coexistence.
The two basic tenants of capitalism are such: that a man has the right to act as he wishes (liberty) and he has the right to the result of those actions (property).
Both of these rights are negative rights on the part of others. There is one constraint and that is that one cannot act in any way that would infringe upon the above mentioned rights of others.
From this there is no sense of what a community should be structured as… it does not address the issue and that seems to me a little incomplete. If one admits that man is to live in a community, as we have been for 30 000 years or more, than there should be some inclusion of positive rights, some recognition of the fact that humans live in groups.
